In the Name of God Amen. The Twenty Second day of February in the First year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Anny by the Grace of God of England, Scotland Fran[ce] and Ireland. Queen defender of the faith & Annoq[ue] domini 1702 I Christ[ophe]r Codrington of dothington in the County of Gloster Esq[ui]r[e] & Cheif Governour of her majesties Leaward Islands in america do make and declare this To be my Last will and Testament.


I recomend my Soul to the God who made me hopeing for Salvation thro’ his mercy and the merits of his Sonn – my worldly Estate I thus dispose of –


Item. I give my nearest Kinsman Leiu[tenan]/t Coll[onel] William Codrington all my Estate in and about dothing[ton] aforesaid, provided & upon Condition that he pay to All Soules Colledge in Oxford, Ten thousand pounds Sterl[ing] in manner following viz: two thousand pounds in one year after my decease the sum of two thousand pounds yearly afterwards untill the sum of Tenn thousand pounds be payd – I doe appoint that six thousand pounds therefore be Expended in Building of a Library for the use of the said Colledge & that the remaining four thousand pounds be Laid out in Books to furnish the same.


Item. I give & bequeath unto the said Colledge my Labrary now in the Custody of Mr John Caswell in Oxford


Item. My will is that all my Sugars w[hi]ch either are of shall be made truly several Plantations in Barbados, Antigua or St Christophers during the present Cropp shall be sent home to England Consigned to Mr Richard Carey merchant in London to be sold by him & remain [as] assets in his hands for the use hereafter mentioned


Item. I give and Bequeath to my Cousin Leiu[tenan]t Collo[nel] W[illiam]m Codrington my plantations at Betty’s Island Antegua. Burthened with five hundred pounds Sterli[ng]. which I give & Bequeath un[to my] Cousin Mrs Rachel Courthope


Item. I give & Bequeath unto my said Kinsman whatsoever Estate I shall dye Possest’ of [in the] Island of St Christophers as also half my island of Burbuda


Item. I give and Bequeath my Plantation being in the Parish of St Johns in Antigua w[i]th the Negroes and all things there to Belonging to Coll[onel]. Micha[el] Lambert of the Island of S\t/ Christophers and W[illiam]m Harman of the Island of Antigua Gent. & their heirs for ever, provided and [on] Condition that they give Five hundred pounds Sterl[ing] unto William the Son of Maudlin M[orange]when he shall arrive at the age of one & Twenty years and that they in the mean Time allow him fourty pounds Sterl[ing] P[er] ann[u]m for his Education and its my desire he should [be] Bred up in the Sea Service


Item. I give and Bequeath my two Plantations in the Island of Barbados to the Society for propagation of the Christian religion in Forreighn parts. Erected & Established by my Late go[od] master King William the third, and my desire is to name the Plantations Continued Int[ire] and three hundred negros at least kept always thereon and a Convenient number of Professors & scholars maintained there. all of them to be under the vow's of Poverty Chastity & Obedience. who shall be oblidged to studdy & practice Physick & Ch[irurgery] as well as divinity. that by the apparent usefulness of the former to all mankind [they] may Both indear themselves to the People & have the better opportunity’s [of doing good] to mens souls which they are Takeing Care of their Bodys, but the Particulars of the Constitution I leave to the Society Composd of good and wise men


Item I give and Bequeath to my friends Collo[nel] Micha[el] Lambert & W[illia]m Harman one Eightt’s part [of] my island of Burbuda the remaining part of my Estate in the said Island I give to the aforesaid Society for the Propagation of Christian religion.


Item. I give to my Friend Vavaseure Cage & to his heirs for Ever my two Parcells of Land Lying in the nonsuch division, the one Consisting of Eighty areas and the other of one hundred and Twenty acres, and I desier my Cousin Leiu[tenan]t/ Collo[nel] William Codrington will be assisting to him in Clearing thereof and build them a house thereof.

Item. I give to my Said Friend Vavaseure Cage my Store house in the Town of Parham in the Island of Antigua

Item. I give and Bequeath unto my Honoura[ble] Freind Charles Boyl Esq[ui]r[e] Fifteen hundred pounds which I have in the million lottery

Item. I give and Bequeath to my friends the R[igh]t Honour[a[ble] the Earl of Peterborough the honoura[ble] the Lord Mord[e]nt, William Blackwail Esq[ui]re James Kendall Esq: Archibald Hutchinson Esq[ui]re, Samuel Codrington Esq[ui]re (of whome I Purchased my estate at Dothington) John Caswel of Oxford, Mr Richard Codrington Minister of Dothington, Sr John Brodrick of the Temple Esq[ui]re the reverend Doct[o]r Geor[ge] Smalridge the reverend doct[o]r Gastrel Preacher of Lincoln’s Inn London. W[illia]m/ Estrich of the Temple Esq[ui]re, doctor Robert Morgan of Christ Ch[urc]h in Oxford. John Yeamans Esq[ui]re Governour of Antegua & Doctor Nathaniel Loyde of Doctors Commons, one hundred Guineas Each


Item. I give and Bequeath to my very good friend Mr Alexander Cunningham one hundred Guineas Besides what I’ve already given him by a deed of gift the Due & Constant payment whereof I recomend most Earnestly & Particularly to my Cousin Leiu[tenan]t Collo[nell] W[illia]m Codrington. Not only for the great respect and friendship I have for that worthy Gent. but by reason the Annuity provided by the said Deed of Gift will be an assistance to him in the great & usefull Labours in w[hi]ch/ he imploys himself for the publick Benefit 


Item. I desire appoint and Impower my friends Archibald Hutchinson Esq[ui]re Mr Richard Carey & Mr Richard Bates to be my Executors for payment of my Legacy's out of the money which I now have in England & which I shall be raised \out/ of the Cropp w[hi]ch I have Directed to be sent home, which Legacys being payd I doe appoint my Cousin Leiu[tenan]t Coll[onel] William Codrington to be my sole Executor. I doe hereby revoke all other wills by me made reserving to my self a power to dispose of such other Legacys as I shall think fit by a Codicil.


Item. I desire that the Body of my dear Father may be Carryd to England & buryed in Westminst[er] Abby. Besides the seaven hundred & Fifty pounds given by the Islands of St Christopher and Antigua for that use I doe appoint & Direct that five hundred pounds Sterli[ng] more be payd by my Executors Towards the Erecting of a Monument for him, the care of which I Earnestly recommend to my good friends Richards Bates James Kendall & Archibald Hutchinson Esq[ui]r[e]s


Item. I desier that my Body may be Interr’d in All Souls Chappel in Oxford and a plain Black Marble of twenty pounds price Laid thereon Dated at Betty’s hope in the Island of Antegua the day and year above written

Leiu[tenan]t Governour of the said Island & the Honoura[ble] John Hamilton one of the Counsill of the said Island, & made oath on the holy Evangelists of almighty God that they ware Present & did see the w[i]thin mentioned Christopher Codrington Esq[ui]r[e] signe seal and Publish the within instrument of writeing as his last will Testam[en]t he Being then in Perfect & Sound Memory & Sence
