Prayers

Coll[onel] Nicholson producing a Copy of General Codringtons Will, with the Probat thereof \dated 23 May 1710/ before Coll. Parke her Ma[jes]tys Governor of the Leeward Islands, the same was read, and another Paper being an Authentic Copy of a Letter Attorney

directed to several Persons in England \R[ichar]d Bate[s] & R[ichar]d Carey Esquir[e] & Christ. Priswick & Nathaniel Carpenter Merchants / signed by Coll.W[illia]m Codrington as Heir at Law & Executor of the last will & Testament of the s[ai]d Gen. Codrington bearing date \from Antigua/ 15 May 1710 was also laid before the Bord by Mr Pierson Agreed that is the opinion of \this Com[m]ittee/ that a Letter should be sent to the s[ai]d/ Coll[onel] W[illia]m/ Codrington under the Seal of the Society desiring him to put the Societys Attornys into the quiet & Peaceable Possection of the Plantations late belonging to the s[ai]d Gen[eral] Codrington, & by him bequeath’d to the s[ai]d Society.

Order’d that the secretary do procure another Authentic Copy of the abovemention’d Letter of Attorny from the s[ai]d Coll. Codrington to the Persons therein nam’d.

order’d that an Authentic Copy of Gen[erall] Codringtons will with the Probat[e] before Coll[onel] Parke be also procured.

Order’d that the Secretary do wait on xx the L[or]d A[rch] B[isho]p \his Grace the President/ and humbly put his Grace in mind of the order of 5 Jan. n.6 ab[ou]t applying to the Queen for Instructing Coll[onel] Lowther to superintend & Countenance the societys Concern in Barbadoes; & that in case his Lo[rdshi]p can’t apply to her Ma[jes]ty immediately that he wil be plees'd to Depute somebody else.

The Treasurer Mr Hodges laid before the bord a Letter from Mr Carpenter dated this present day \excusing his Attendance/ & giving his Advice that the society should take out an Authentic Copy of the will of Gen[eral] Codrington, & have it attested under the City’s Seal, & to send it over to the society’s Attornys & to direct them to take Possession of the Societys Estate & to make an Inventory thereof, & to examine what Altera-tions have been made in the s[ai]d Estate since the Generals Death & to employ Mr Smalridge (the society’s Manager) in taking Care of the Plantations, & to remit the Sugars, with an Acc[oun]t of what shall be wanting to keep, the Estate in good order & lastly advises that the Societys Letters of Attorny be wit-nessed by some People that go \are going/ over to Barbados: Agreed that the above mention’d Letter be laid before y\e/ Society.

Agreed to move the society that application may be made to the Queen that orders may be sent to Coll[onel] John Yeaman & Coll[onel] John Hamilton two of the Gentlemen that proved Gen[eral] Codringtons wil in Antego before Governor Parke or such other witnesses to the s[ai]d will as may be thought necessary to pass from Antego to Barbados in order to give their Advice & Assistance to the Societys Attorneys in proving the s[ai]d will in case any Difficulty or obstructions shal arise from the s[ai]d Coll[onel] Codrington the Heir at Law & Executor & that the s[ai]d orders may be signify’d to the s[ai]d witnesses by the Governor of Barbados for the time being.

Order’d that the Secretary do prepare a Memorial containing the substance of what those Instructions w[hi]ch may are thought proper to be given to the Governor of Barbados if her Majesty shal approve of them & that he wait on the L[or]d/ A[rch]B[isho]p and lay it before the Society at next Meeting.

Agreed that Coll. Nicholson, Mr Hodges & the Secretary be desir\d/ to meet Mr Carpenter \&/ Mr Tryon at Robins Coffee house in Exchange Ally & to consult with them ab[ou]t proper Insturctions & Powers to be given to the Attorneys & Managers &c, and to report to this Com-mittee at 3 on wednesday next in the Afternoon.
